Gatis Cirulis Artist Painting Drawing

Originally from a small country on the Baltic Sea, Latvia, Gatis has travelled across the United States for work and study, and has settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Having grown up on a farm, Gatis pursued agricultural education until he came to the US and enrolled in art courses at a small Michigan community college. Several years later, he has earned an MFA degree from the Indiana State University, Bloomington. He has worked as a graphic designer, illustrator, art director and has taught design and art at the university level. His work has been shown and published both in the United States and in Europe. Gatis also works on commercial and residential murals in the US and abroad. After settling in Santa Fe, Gatis devotes his time to his family, freelance creative practice, martial arts and growing a garden in the desert.

In my work, I explore non-verbal communication, symbols and ideas that unite cultures and cross language barriers. There is an expectation of misunderstanding whenever there is a cultural or language divide. However, all people have common knowledge of basic elements, spatial directions, cycles of seasons and human body. Intuitive universal knowledge exists across various cultures. My own intercultural experience feeds my interest in how this intuitive knowledge can connect cultures without the use of language.

I grew up on a family farm in Latvia, a small country on the Baltic Sea. Working on the land and with animals, playing in the fields and forests, I saw natures fluidity, beauty and struggle. My work is about the cyclical rhythms of nature, the reliable patterns that are part of the universal knowledge.

Having worked in both traditional and digital media, my work always starts with pencil on paper — a way to think with my hands. I approach drawing as a river—you can walk into it at the same location, but it will never be the same, it always evolves and flows.
